Act 2
Personality
Sometimes, when I’m alone and feeling particularly masochistic, I like looking back to my past. And I think, “Oh shit, I messed up...didn’t I?” Why else would I be here?Movie stars are supposed to be charismatic, glamorous. They drip charm and beauty. Hollywood is pregnant with fame.
Kim-Ly doesn’t fit in this equation. She is Pluto amongst a thousand Jupiters. But we’re talking about stars here, not planets.
As an athlete, Kim-Ly was the type that people liked seeing on screen, unsmiling and stoic during interviews, people felt safe putting the nations reputation at her feet. Kim-Ly was proud enough that she liked seeing it there –and maybe there was a small part of her that always wanted to step on it- to see what the United States would look like soaked with chlorine. She likes her country…but she’ll always love Vietnam that much more. She’s patriot after all…just not the type people usually think of.
She might not be who comes to mind first when you think of the word “charisma”, but there is something about Kim-Ly that draws people in. Short, thin, and plain, she manages to stand out in a crowd. Her pride endows her with a certain grace that seems to elude the normal bustle of everyday life. It is Kim-Ly’s personal philosophy not to rush, even if she is running late (which is rarely). Likewise, she doesn’t see it as her responsibility to impress. If ever confronted by the press, friends, or strangers about her past or some noteworthy event, she will insist on sticking to her own strong moral code. Honesty is ALWAYS the best policy…and if Kim-Ly is anything, she’s honest.
To her collogues and casters, she paints a very intimidating picture indeed. Because of her often-patronizing sense of humor, harsh philosophies, and uncompromising positions, others often tend to avoid getting into confrontations with the woman. And yet, like most people, she has a weakness. She never had kids and, due to genetic difficulties, she never will. That doesn’t stop her from shirking her spiky outer shell when it comes to kids. Or an injured bird. Or anything that just screams “I’m innocent, please love me.” She needs to protect others, even if that means she insults everyone else on the way.
Kim-Ly is not going to go all Angeline Jolie adopt-200-children from anywhere…but it’s certainly a nice thought.
But, used to success and infallibly stubborn, Kim-Ly is held back by her own bitterness. She can’t move on. Though she is a firm believer of redemptions, she is also a firm believer that ordinary laws and rules don’t apply to her. Naturally, this creates something of a paradox and very things Kim-Ly hates most in other people are almost overwhelmingly present in herself. She frowns upon the cruelty and prejudice in society, though, in her anger and pride she commits the same infringements. And truthfully, masked behind genuine gentleness, Kim-Ly is angry. Moodiness –accompanied with intelligence- is a fatal combination.
Kim-Ly will never match the persona she tries to build herself through her voice and on screen. And perhaps, that is what draws her to Hollywood: the illusion of it all.
Quirks
*It is not uncommon to see Kim-Ly turn to fish sauce (her favorite condiment) and gravitate towards recipes that include it in times of trouble or stress. She prefers the brands known their strong, nutty flavors.
*She refuses to wear only white or black. Kim-Ly loves bright colors and will insist on having at least one brightly colored article on her person. Usually this will come in the form of a silk flower she wears in her hair.
*Kim-Ly is a firm believer in the healing power of gardening. Whenever something awful happens, she can be found in a greenhouse or a garden, tilling the ground, water, and pulling weeds for hours on end. Only when things get better does she actually plant anything.
*Pranks are a necessary way to keep things exciting,
Act 3
Likes +Family: Just because she doesn't really have one, does not mean she doesn't value the exquisite beauty of the family unit.+Swimming: She grew up by the ocean, she swam everyday and competed internationally...so yes, yes, she's very find of swimming. +Formal Occasions: A chance to break out the Ao Dais! +Technology: It's soooo coooool! Did you know that there's a robot from Vietnam that can play ping Pong? So awesome, right? She was an engineer, she's allowed to geek out over a few things. +Pedicures: Kim-Ly rarely wears make up and it's even rarer that she wears open toed shoes. At the end of the day it's nice to just take off your shoes and just see ten perfect, brightly painted toenails. +Flowers: Her replacement children. They're everywhere in her flat; overflowing window boxes, creeping into the sink, taking up the kitchen table...there may or may not be a flock of Lotus's in the spare bathtub. Don't take them out, it'll hurt the roots. +Motorcycles: Are the Best +Fish Sauce: Is awesome +Rice: Is also awesome +Children: Maybe she wants what she can't have...but Kim-Ly's always had the urge to protect the innocent. She's thought about adopting but, well, she's busy. +Winning: She's hasn't lost any of her "games" yet. Nothing beats that final rush of adrenaline and final satisfying stab of relief when you prove that you're better than everyone else. +Fairytales: Nothing beats a fairytale ending -even if they never happen. +The Morning: Is always os fresh. Like her jokes. +Cooking: Her food is the best...why bother with cheap knock offs when you can do it yourself? +Cinnamon in her Coffee: Picture it...and early morning. The birds are chirping, you're alone in the coffee shop. You just sit there, stirring your coffee, watching the city wake up. There's no crime in the morning, the night is over. +The Rain: Cleanses everything and let's things grow. How could she not like it? | Dislikes -“Boring” People: Kim-Ly needs stimulation, but, more than that, the idea that there are people on the earth who don’t hone any personal interests just frustrates her. They’re a waste of her time and honestly, they’re a waste of their own time. -Fire: She’s not scared of it…but she’s not overly fond of it either. -Burberry: Ah, 2,000 dollar coats. Another symptom of waste and affluenza. Given her industry...an odd thing to dislike. -Discrimination: Ethnic, Race, Sexual…yuck. Kim-Ly is a very strong feminist any negative comments about her gender won’t end well for the perpetrator. -Purses: Huge purses are neither frugal nor sensible. Why are they so big? What do people put in there? Back problems…are back problems an issue? -Gluttony/Greed/Wrath: People who engage in excess lack discipline. Without discipline, what separates human from beast? Nothing. She, at least, will not be reduced to a mere animal. -Winter: Nothing is green and everything is dead. Coats are awful. The wind is awful. Winter is awful. -Stupidity: Stupidity is different from ignorance. Ignorance means that someone just doesn’t know. Stupidity means that they stopped trying to understand or know. To Kim-Ly, that sort of attitude is entirely unacceptable and repulsive. -Miss Saigon: Kim-Ly remains unamused by both musicals and flimsy soap opera-y (in her opinion) plot lines. And the comparisons between her and Kim. Yeah. That’s gotta stop. -“Gooood Moooorning Vietnaaaam”:Not necessary. Is it really a good morning when there’s yelling involved? -Cigarettes: She’s done pretty well with going cold turkey –it was an exercise in self-discipline. That doesn’t mean the cravings have stopped though, smoke one in front of her and she’ll knock it right out of your hand. And don’t ask for a lighter |
Aspirations -She wants to set an example for other women who want to enter the entertainment industry. She needs to prove to herself that success can be based on skill and hard work, not just pure beauty or privilege.-Be given a male part to voice act or play. Just to say that she did it. -Start a fund for land mine victims back in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. Maybe she doesn't live there anymore and maybe she is estranged from most of her family. But Kim-Ly will not forget her roots and her duties. | Insecurities *-Fading into anonymity: Kim-Ly is an introvert and she does not necessarily like being in the limelight. She also does not like being ignored and she’s used to being recognized and fawned over by people. For about a year after her swimming career ended she was terrified by her lack of importance. Despite her medals, she had made little impact in the universe. She sees this newest venture as her second, and last, chance to change things. -Her Hair: Kim-Ly loves her hair, she rarely cuts it…and she knows she won’t ever be able to cut it all off. It’s her sole vanity, and the sole reminder of her roots. People in America don’t talk like her or have her accent. They cut their hair into fashionable bobs, straighten it, or curl it. She worries that as long as she keeps it, she will be seen as an outsider. |
Epilogue
Background
There are two things in Kim-Ly which always have remained stable in life: her optimism and her toughness.
She was optimistic because even though she and her family were dirt poor (more precisely rich only in what grew out of the soil: rice), she believed that someone would come back and realize their mistake. They'd say "You and you're family don't deserve to live like like this! It says so on this clipboard! Here's $100,000 and a plane trip to Australia."
That never happened. But that didn't mean it couldn't.
She was tough when she had to fight older children of from her younger sister, who had a cleft lip and was so shy and withdrawn and no one ever thought she wander off and find a land mine.
The media came first. Then Hollywood. Back in Vietnam, the Nguyen family had no idea that the documentary back in the states made millions. They didn't see a penny.
At age 10, Kim-Ly started swimming Her mother had told her that when their country first came to be, their people were pearl divers. Kim-Ly liked to think that if she dug deep enough, she'd find a nice house they could all live in and put in Australia. She figured that was basically the same thing as a pearl.
At age seventeen, Kim-Ly managed to gain a scholarship to a University in the US. She got it for swimming. It was around then her family cut off contact from her.
At nineteen, she had won her first gold medal at the olympics for the 200 meter medley. But after being caught in a fire a few years later, her doctors told her to slow down.
Slow wasn't in Kim-Ly's vocabulary. She was always good at pretending to be someone else. She always could hide her thick accent when she faced the cameras. "I had family in New Zealand" she told them. She was not a bad voice actress -and besides, she didn't want anyone to see her. Not yet.
Theoretically, at 25 you're a fourth of your way through your life. Kim-Ly thinks this is auspicious. She decided to emerge from her carefully constructed cocoon behind cartoons and animations.
